I was genuinely looking for a real dating sim visual novel and from the moment I saw the “this game is not for the easily disturbed” warning at the beginning I was sorely disappointed. The writing is so bad and it wears it’s inspiration on its sleeve so much it’s overdressed and now you can’t see its hands. However, there are plenty of great visual novels that aren’t dating sims, and plenty of great dating sims that aren’t visual novels! Where Helltaker sets itself apart from other puzzle-adventure games is in its premise. Not many games have players going to Hell to pick up demonic women, so Piskorz wanted to make that the focus of the game.

While a couple of games are well-known in the gaming community, a lot of them are more obscure. Not only is Hatoful Boyfriend one of the funniest and most bizarre dating sims out there, it is also celebrated for its variety of endings and character depth. Like Doki Doki Literature Club, Hatoful Boyfriend’s silly exterior hides a much deeper and fascinating storyline.

Originally released in 1996, Sakura Wars features a mix of tactical role-playing mechanics with some visual novel dating sim elements to provide its own distinct experience. Helltaker features a pretty out-there concept, but it’s definitely worth playing for anyone who’s interested in fun puzzle games. The puzzles take place on a grid where players have to maneuver Helltaker across the stage by avoiding traps and collecting keys in order to reach the demon girl within a certain number of moves.

Granted, getting people to brave the stigma of playing the genre that is widely taken as the epitome of uncomfortable nerd wish fulfillment might be difficult. At the same time, many popular franchises—like Mass Effect and Persona—are good because of the near-dating sim elements they posses. I think we collectively like to pretend otherwise, though—thinking of some games as ‘dating simulators’ seems kind of shameful. Crush Crush is a fun, romantic, and even sexy idle dating simulation.
